Security Analyst Emmanuel Kotin has slammed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its reaction to the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Chairman Wontumi was recently invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and later picked up by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for questioning over alleged illegal mining activities.
His arrest triggered protests from party supporters and officials, prompting military presence at EOCO’s premises.
Several NPP figures, including National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye and former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover, accused EOCO and the government of political harassment, describing the arrest as heavy-handed and unjustified.
However, speaking on Morning Starr with Joshua Kodjo Mensah, Mr. Kotin criticised the party’s conduct, calling it damaging to the NPP’s image.
He said, “In fact, I’m quite shocked about the behavior of the NPP as a political party. As a security analyst, I’m struggling to see where Wontumi’s rights have been violated. The law enforcement agencies have every right, depending on the mode of operation they deem right, to take in a person of interest. And we must all remember that a public office stands with accountability and any institution that doesn’t enforce its laws is not worth living for.”
He added: “So NPP, I am shocked that as a child, the party some of us love so much, admire their kind of vision for the country, the party of the Rocha and Peter Ala Adjetey, the former president Kufuor and the team he assembled, how come NPP have just declined to this level? And you have national leaders behaving as if we are doing student politics. You have national leaders behaving as if NPP had been in opposition for so many years.”

Mr. Kotin further urged the party to be mindful of how its actions are perceived by the public, especially on social media.
“I listened to my good brother Richard Ahiagbah, they are doing a lot of damage to the brand of the party, the image. They should go to social media and read the comments people bring about some of these interviews they make. You see, Ghanaians are well awake now, and they should not underestimate the power of social media.”
