The Ghana Police Service has intensified its fight against drug-related crime in the Northern Region, with 217 suspects arrested within one month under a special anti-crime operation code-named Red Maria.
Northern Regional Police Commander, Wisdom Lavoe, disclosed that the operation was launched following the redeployment of the IGP’s special unit, with a clear mandate to clamp down on drug abuse and associated criminal activities, particularly in the Tamale metropolis.
“In the space of a month, the Special Operations team known as the Red Maria have arrested 217 people and processed them for court in the space of a month. Among them, 40 have been convicted, 32 have paid fines, 8 are currently serving prison sentences and 31 remain on remand,” he said.
The operation targeted identified hotspots including Tishigu, Abuabo, Nabisco, Nantong, and Nyanshegu, using intelligence-led strategies.
“These operations have been very impactful and encouraging,” DCOP Lavoe noted.
He further revealed that fines imposed ranged from GH₵2,400 to GH₵120,000, while prison sentences span between 15 months and 15 years. So far, a total of GH₵72,000 has been paid in fines.
Highlighting the consequences for repeat offenders, DCOP Lavoe cited a recent case involving an individual who was fined GH₵120,000 or face 15 years in prison after previously being fined GH₵12,000.
“This should serve as a strong warning. If you are caught again, the consequences will be more severe,” he cautioned.
Beyond the arrests, the Police Commander noted that residents are already witnessing improvements in affected communities.
“When you pass through those places now, you won’t see the crowds of young men anymore,” he said, referencing feedback from locals.
DCOP Lavoe stressed that the police will not tolerate any interference in their operations.
“We are determined to be firm. Anyone arrested with drugs will be taken through the legal process—no exceptions,” he stated.
He also called on the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information.
“Together, we can build a safer and more secure Northern Region,” he added.
