The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of Michael Mensah, a 39-year-old Taxi Driver in connection with the murder of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a level 200 student at the University of Cape Coast.
Mensah was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team on Monday, 15th June 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast, following sustained intelligence-led operations.
According to preliminary investigations, on Friday, 11th June 2026, at about 6:48 p.m., the suspect allegedly picked up the deceased from the Ayensu Plaza area within the University of Cape Coast hostel enclave. He then drove her to Hutchland Beach, where she was last seen alive.
Mensah, who claims to be a teacher by profession and also works as a driver, is currently in police custody.
“The swift arrest of the suspect demonstrates the commitment of the Ghana Police Service to ensuring the safety of our students and bringing perpetrators of such heinous crimes to justice. Our Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team acted on credible intelligence to apprehend him before he could evade capture,” a statement from the police read in part.
The Police further urged “anyone with additional information regarding this case to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. The family of the deceased has been duly informed, and we extend our deepest condolences to them during this difficult time.”
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the murder are continuing, and further updates will be provided as new developments emerge.
