A devastating boat accident on Volta Lake has claimed nine lives, including women and children.
The incident happened on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, around 5:30 pm. in the East Gonja District.
The vessel was travelling between Sikakope and Mataiko on the Yeji–Congo route when tough weather conditions led to the boat capsizing.
Out of 14 passengers on board, which were primarily women and children, nine died while five passengers (all male) were rescued.
Savannah Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe confirmed the casualties in a radio interview.
“We’ve directed the district NADMO officers to quickly move to the site and see what other packages are available to give to them.
“We are also mobilising resources to assist the families affected, but it is unfortunate that we lost nine patriots’ lives,” he said.
