Wardrobe series: Beauty for ashes – Anniversary Gift

I decided to pay Kwame a surprise visit to his office one day.
I went by few minutes to lunch time. My intention was to go for lunch with him.

He worked alone as a contractor, but had a secretary who helped with administrative work.

There were no visitors at the reception, it was just the receptionist who was busy on her phone.
I greeted her: “Hi Doris how are you?”
“Am fine” she responded
“Is my husband in his office?”
“Yes”

All this while, her head was buried in her phone. She didn’t even raise her head to look at me. That’s how much social media has influenced people.

Kwame heard my voice and so when I got to his door, his head was up just waiting to confirm his suspicion….

“Hi Love” I went close to give him a kiss on his cheek but he stopped me. ..

“This is an office, Asantewaa and anybody can walk in here at any time. I have warned you that I don’t entertain such things here…”

“But it’s only a peck..
And your receptionist will definitely alert you before allowing access to anyone.”

“Tell me, what are you doing here?”

“I came to invite you out for lunch”

“Oh really…. Thanks but you didn’t have to because I have a meeting outside and I am already running late”

“I wanted to surprise you since it’s been a while…”

“Thanks for your intention but it’s wrong timing.
So what’s next, I hope you are going back to your office and not going to stay here?”

“I will go back to the office” I said gently

“Ok then you better go now because we have to leave for the meeting right away”

And with that he walked out of the office….
I heard him say “Doris hurry up and let’s go and make sure you lock the door to the office…”

I walked out of the office with a sombre face and went to eat alone.

I had to defer my course in level 200 because I was not doing well with my academics.
Kwame’s mum called me one evening. Her efforts to reach Kwame had proved futile so she called me. Kwame had travelled for a week to go and work on a project in Takoradi. He called me when he got there on the first day to let me know he was fine, and since then we had not spoken. This was not the first time though. Almost every month, he travelled for one week to one location or the other.

I didn’t know whether to tell his mother that I had not also heard from her son since he got to Takoradi and that his phones are off.

If I did, she would have chided Kwame and that would have meant trouble for me.
She held me in high esteem and was so fond of me.
I told her the network there was bad and that I would ask Kwame to get in touch with her when I reach him.

Kwame’s mum, a disciplinarian will not tolerate such a behaviour from her son.

It reminds me of the first time I met her. Kwame had told me how strict she was, how she had keen interest in the woman he would marry, and how her approval was a decider for our marriage.
I was as a result quite tensed the day Kwame went with me to see her.

Just after Kwame introduced me to her as his fiancée, she got up from her seat and started dancing in jubilation. …
I was so shocked because I didn’t know what to expect before going to her house.

“Kwame has found a wife ooooo. Kwame has come of age oooo” she sang in jubilation.

She welcomed me wholeheartedly into the family and that was so important for me.
Which woman wouldn’t be grateful that her mother in law is on her side or that she is in her good books?

If only she knew the ordeal her son was putting me through.

When Kwame returned and I told him his mum called in his absence, you could see the fear in his eyes…
“So what did you tell her” he asked

“I didn’t tell her your phones were off. I told her the network was bad at the location”

“Ok. Thanks” He said.

Not only did Kwame frequently travel but also his attendance to church became less frequent.

The once active Christian who was always at church began to give excuses why he couldn’t make it to church…
“Am tired”
“I have work to do”
“I have nothing to wear”
“I will go next week”

I had to cook up all kinds of excuses to cover up at church when people asked of his whereabouts.

On our fourth wedding anniversary, I chanced upon something that gave me chills. I was in the bedroom getting dressed for work. Kwame was having his shower.

It was as if nemesis was catching up on him.

He had left his phone on the bed, and that was where I was sitting.
Then a message popped up on his phone. There was no way I couldn’t have seen the message.
It read;
“Bae, we have a date at our usual movie house this evening. Let me give you a treat. Kisses”.

My heart began to beat very fast.

“Oh my God. So Kwame’s behaviour is all because of another woman?
But even if there was another woman did he have to treat me the way he was treating me, as if I was the cause” I sobbed.

I quickly wiped the tears before Kwame walked into the bedroom.
When he got to the bedroom I asked him a question which took him by surprise…

“Kwame so do you love me and have you ever loved me?”

“Why that question? Where is it coming from?”

“I am asking because today is our anniversary.”

“Oh really?”
He had forgotten.

“Asantewaa I don’t need to repeat that to you every day. I love you”

“Then why don’t you ever tell me?”

“Ho! you women, the moment we tell you always that we love you then you become swollen-headed and start misbehaving.
My actions are better than what I say. Don’t I take care of you and Kayla?”

“You do”

“Good! Happy anniversary!”

And with that he walked out.

So I ask my dear ladies, and the men too, is it true that we become swollen headed and start misbehaving when our men profess their love to us always?

I had plans for our anniversary….
I was thinking of a diner date, just the two of us, just to relive the moments of our wedding day, renew our vows and strengthen the cords of our love which had weakened.

But the whatsapp message marred everything.

“Who is this woman who is trying to break my home?
What is this woman offering my husband that I am not offering him?
Since when has he been seeing this woman?”

The name that came with the message was She.

“Who is this She?”

“People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall.”

Proverbs 10:9 (NLT)
