PHOTOS: Airport roads deteriorate

Large portions of roads in Accra’s Airport Residential Area have started deteriorating making them unmotorable.

Roads such as Yapei Link, Association Loop (beside the Association International School), Kwabena Duffuor Street, sections of Nyaho Clinic road and intersections, and 7th Street Airport Residential Area are so rough and riddled with potholes that using them is a nightmare, especially after every rainfall.

The situation is so bad that at almost every intersection you come across in the area has one or two potholes.

Due to the constructions ongoing in the area, heavy duty and articulated trucks use the road regularly, making the situation even worse.

The development tends to exert a lot of pressure on the roads because there are no dedicated lanes or roads for the articulated tracks.

The irony is that the area houses several embassies and offices which contribute to Ghana’s economy, but it appears the roads have been neglected for some time now.

Apart from contributing to the economic fortunes of the country, the Airport roads serve as source of rescue for drivers whenever there is traffic build up on the Accra-37 Military Hospital stretch.

The road in front of the Diplomatic Shop for instance has been the concern of many residents and those who patronise the shop for years.

Even after some patches were done on the road months ago, it has started wearing apart raising concerns about its durability.

The Nyaho Clinic road and some intersections cannot also be left out because sections get flooded whenever it rains.

Filling of roads

A close monitoring of the situation by the Daily Graphic indicate that the roads keep on developing faults every now and then because they have been ignored for long.

As a result, some of the residents have taken it upon themselves to constantly patch the roads with gravels, stones and sand to make it motorable.

But that has not yielded any fruits as the rains usually wash them after a heavy downpour.

A resident who preferred to be called Emmanuel is usually spotted on the Nyaho Clinic road busily filling some potholes on that stretch.

According to him, he has been doing that for quite some time now because the authorities have ignored the road and intersections which keep on deteriorating day in day out.

“I have been doing this thing anytime it rains so that the road becomes easily passable for motorists and pedestrians,” he told the Daily Graphic.

Road repairs in Accra

Early this year, the government started with repair works on some 253 roads in the capital and other parts of the country.

Even though the Daily Graphic observed that some roads in the enclave have been repaired, it appears the aforementioned and many others are yet to receive any attention at all.

For now, it is the fervent prayers of the residents that the Airport roads receive the needed attention as soon as possible, failure of which will make life extremely unbearable for both the residents and owners of businesses in the area.
