About sixty drivers of the Aayalolo transport system at ofankor in Accra are on a sit-down strike in protest of unpaid salaries.
The drivers according to Starr News’ Daniel Nii Lartey have arrears from as far back as January and two other outstanding months and will not work until those arrears are paid, and a clear payment system instituted for sustained payment of salaries.
The drivers said arrears from January are still pending and payment is usually half of the actual amount and also not regular.
The drivers added that although they feel privileged to have been employed by the government as drivers, government has not been fair to them.
“We started work as far back as November 2016 with arrears with some of the months such as January, September and October. Most at times, the month will end and beyond and our salaries will be paid around 15th of the new month which is not fair to us. As we speak right now, one of our colleague drivers is sick at the Winneba hospital and he has no money to pay for his hospital bills.
“There are others too who showed me text messages of their wards requesting for payment of their school fees and there is no money for them to pay.The situation is very disheartening and the earlier something is done about it the better for all of us,” spokesperson for the aggrieved drivers, Foster Omari-Wiafe, Lamented
Foster among other things also called on the authorities to furnish them with specific dates to expect their salaries so they can plan their budget accordingly.
“We want authorities to institute a proper payment system as well so that we will know when specifically our salaries will be paid, whether at the last day of every month, middle of the month etc so we plan our budget accordingly and go on with our work with a sound mind”.
