Former president John Agyekum Kufuor has disclosed that he never had the chance to advise former presidents John Mills and John Mahama.
This was because his relationship with the duo was on civil basis, he stated on Starr Chat Wednesday, December 20.
“…Immediately after me came late president Mills. He was civil with me generally but perhaps the opportunity wasn’t there for me to suggest that look at things this way or that way. Then president Mahama came very nice with me but again not much of an opportunity,” he told Starr Chat host Bola Ray.
When Bola Ray further enquired that “so you didn’t suggest anything to former president Mahama?” the former president retorted “what could I suggest? We as it were very civil…we meet on very friendly basis not politically.”
Late Mills took over from Kufour in 2009 after winning the 2008 elections. He was succeeded by Mahama following his untimely death.
Kufour was president of Ghana from 7 January 2001 to 7 January 2009. He was also Chairperson of the African Union from 2007 to 2008.
His victory over John Evans Atta Mills after the end of Jerry Rawlings’ second term marked the first peaceful democratic transition of power in Ghana since independence in 1957.
Kufuor’s career has been spent on the liberal-democratic side of Ghanaian politics, in the parties descended from the United Gold Coast Convention and the United Party.
He was a Minister in Kofi Abrefa Busia’s Progress Party government during Ghana’s Second Republic, and a Popular Front Party opposition frontbencher during the Third Republic.
In the Fourth Republic he stood as the New Patriotic Party’s candidate at the 1996 election, and then led it to victory in 2000 and 2004.
