GIBA donates to Accra Psychiatric Hospital

The Ghana Insurance Brokers Association (GIBA) has given a major boost to operations at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital with the donation of hospital equipment and food items to improve the living conditions of the inmates at the facility.

The items include Hospital Beds (3), Stretchers (3), wheelchairs (3), ceiling fans (4), 50kg bags of rice (7), 50kg bags of sugar (2), 25L gallons of cooking oil (4), cartons of milk (8), packs of biscuits & bread, boxes and bags of mineral water, boxes of used items, clothing for male adults, clothing for female adults, clothing for kids, footwear and bed sheets worth Gh₵10,000 excluding the clothings.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President of GIBA, Lena Adu-Kofi said the donation forms part of their 30th Anniversary Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to support the underprivileged in the society.

She added that the Association which exists to serve the interest of its members and secure a better life for people seeks to extend its benevolence to the inmates at the hospital.

Bemoaning the low penetration of insurance in Ghana, Mrs Adu-Kofi indicated that the Association is set to intensify education to complement the efforts of the regulator to increase insurance penetration in the country to double digits.

This comes at a time when the National Insurance Commission (NIC) is seeking to increase penetration up to 50percent.

According to her, massive education is needed to improve the situation by all stakeholders in the industry.

Touching on the frustrations and legal battles clients go through in the hands of some insurance companies regarding claim settlements, Mrs Adu-Kofi said it should not deter others as records indicate that a lot of claims have been paid to clients successfully.

According to her, the Association will consider publishing payments of claims by insurance companies annually to demystify the wrong perception people have of insurance in the country.

Even though only a few Ghanaians appreciate the benefit of insurance, Mrs Adu-Kofi advised Ghanaians to seek the services of an insurance broker to avoid frustrations regarding claims paid by insurance companies.

She emphasized that most insurance brokers are well versed in the insurance market and therefore are in the position to give advice on companies that offer the best products and services.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Emmanuel Aboagye Appiah said the facility has never seen any facelift since it was established.

He expressed his gratitude to officers from GIBA and assured them of the judicious use of the items to the benefit of all.

Mr Aboagye Appiah also called on benevolent organisations to follow the examples of GIBA to help improve the living conditions of the inmates in the hospital.
