A two-and-half year-old boy has drowned in an abandoned mining pit at Anum Apapam in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region.
The incident occurred around 5:30pm Tuesday March 20,2019.
The deceased , Jibiril Doku, and his neighborhood friends went to the abandoned mining pit filled with water hence used as swimming pool to spectate but unfortunately fell into the pool.
Attempt to save him proved futile as he was retrieved already suffocated and died while be rushed to the hospital.
He has since been buried in accordance with Islamic tradition.
This is not the first time such incident has occurred in the area. According to residents, at least 3 children have drowned since 2016.
The acting District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the area , Joseph Okai Gyan , told Starr News the Organization last year visited the community and noticed the danger the abandoned mining pits pose to residents particularly children in the area and sent reports to the appropriate authorities for reclamation which has not been done.
According to him many houses are closely surrounded by these mined pits creating atmosphere of anxiety to parents. He called on government agencies responsible to come to the aide of the community to reclaim the pits.
