A security analyst has bemoaned what he says is the hasty approach the acting IGP James Oppong-Boanuh is adopting in his operations since assuming office.
According to Emmanuel Kutin, the decision by the Police chief to suspend the Lakeside estate commander from his post is a sign of an individual who is in a hurry to make an impression.
“I think he’s too much in a hurry to impress people, he was the deputy IGP and had a good platform to ensure that his boss succeeded. He had made several profound statements that he’ll listen to both the junior and senior officers. Does it mean that his boss was not giving the platform of same? It creates a certain scenario,” he noted on the Alert show on Starr FM Tuesday.
He stressed: “Should it take the IGP to interdict an officer when the Regional Commander whom these commanders report to is there, are we not undermining the system. To me, like I mentioned he’s too much in a hurry to impress and he should put it in his mind that he’s a guardian angel”.
Mr. Oppong-Boanuh has directed the immediate interdiction of the Lakeside District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Eric Partey Opata, for keeping a suspect in police custody for nine days.
The Adenta Divisional Police Commander, ACP Cephas Coffie, has been directed to supervise the command till further notice.
The Director-General of the Police Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) David Senanu Eklu, disclosed these in an interview with the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday (July 18, 2019).
He said the IGP’s action followed a formal complaint made by the suspect (name withheld) to the police hierarchy for human right abuse.
The Director-General of the Police Public Affairs said DSP Opata was asked to hand over all weapons, uniforms and other police accoutrement, including badge, to be kept in safe custody.
ACP Eklu said the Police Commander’s bungalow was also expected to be searched for any police property he may have in his possession.
