MP hopeful for Sege constituency in the Greater Accra region, Ms Eunice Lasi has advised students to take science and mathematics seriously from the basic school level to make it easier for them to pursue the subjects and other fields of study in higher education.

The NPP parliamentary candidate made the appeal while delivering a speech at the finals of an inter-circuit science and maths quiz competition organised for Junior High school pupils in the Ada West District.

Five schools represented the Songhor, Anyamam, Sege, Afiadenyigba and Koluedor circuits in the five-round quiz challenge, which came off at the premises of the District Assembly in Sege on Monday.

The event brought together pupils and teachers of participating schools, and was attended by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi as well as Director of Education for the district, Ms W.A. Gbadago.

Help improve education

Ms Lasi told newsmen on the sidelines of the event that her interest in education coupled with the crucial need to improve the quality of learning in the district motivated her team to embark on the initiative.

She added the contest would encourage learning of science and maths in schools within the area, which would help pupils to gain a foothold in their future academic endeavours.

“We put this together to help basic schools in the area perform better in their academics,” she mentioned.

She said she was confident the exercise would generate positive competition among schools in the district and ultimately lead to the improvement in their academic performance in the region.

Ms Lasi said the competition would be periodically organised and could serve as a baseline for assessing the quality of teaching and learning in schools within the district.

Enhance analytical skills

For his part, Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi commended organisers of the contest, saying the initiative fitted into his outfit’s plan geared towards improving the quality of education in the district.

Akrofi said the academic exercise would only help boost the confidence of pupils in taking on challenges, but also enhance their analytical skills and them develop into problem-solvers for society in future.

“This will sharpen the pupils’ aptitude for learning and enhance their understanding of other subjects,” he remarked.

Mr Akrofi said he would welcome initiatives from any pro-education non-governmental organisations and other bodies that would contribute to turning around the quality of education in the area.

At the end of the contest, the Anyamam circuit won with 48 points followed by the Songhor and Sege circuits with 46 and 35 points respectively.

The Parliamentary aspirant presented text and exercise books, printers and other stationery to the schools that participated in the competition.
