The National Petroleum Authority has asked petroleum product consumers to report to the authority any suspicion of adulterated fuel, within 48hrs.
Chief Executive Officer of NPA, Dr. Mustapha Hamid speaking at the end of the Authority’s Consumer Week said the fight against adulterated fuel can only be realized if consumers report such cases.
He urged “report any problem that they have with fuel quality within 48hrs and we emphasize the 48hrs because for a period beyond 48hrs, the evidence may have been tampered with by the culprit and it may therefore be difficult to pin them down.”
He added that consumers should not hesitate at any point in taking receipts.”
“For most of us, because we are not going to the office to go and claim the money in buying fuel, we often time just wave off the attendant and say receipts are not necessary because it’s for my own consumption. The reason we also collect receipts is so that if something goes wrong, there is a paper trail to be able to deal with the matter.”
According to the CEO, his outfit has a standby intelligence and security team that need timely information to enable them to protect consumers against the sale of fake fuel.
“When NPA receives the complaints, the NPA opens an investigation immediately. And we have very proactive and efficient security and intelligence department that will deal with these matters. And we shall ensure that at any point in time the complainant is kept appressed with the processes of the matter.”
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa in his remarks noted that consumers are always disadvantaged by the actions of those who sell adulterated fuel.
“Contaminated fuel cause engines to malfunction and comes at extra cost to the consumer to restore damaged engines.”
As a result of the stringent measures instituted, the retail outlet failure rate has reduced drastically from 32% as of 2013 to 2.5% as of August 2021, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority said.
