Former second lady, Hajia Ramatu Aliu Mahama, has been laid to rest after a state funeral on Saturday.
The ceremony, held at the Black Star Square in Accra, saw key players in government and the Islamic community pay their last respects to a woman they described as one of the mothers of the nation.
In a somber ceremony at the Black Star Square, the body of the late former second lady, Hajia Ramatu Aliu Mahama was placed on a catafalque for the last round of respects by sympathizers.
First to file past was Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, in the company of former President John Agyekum Kuffour.
Having served as second lady in the Kuffour-led administration, President Kuffour remarked that Hajia Ramatu was a hospitable person.
“She was a great hostess, whenever we travelled to the North, especially around Tamale, she was the hostess that saw to our comfort,” President Kuffour intimated.
The current first and second ladies, Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Samira Bawumia respectively took turns to also pay their last respects.
The Salat al-Janaza, an Islamic prayer performed in congregation to seek pardon for the deceased and all dead Muslims, was led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Nuhu Shaributu with the gathering for the former stateswoman.
The body was transported to Tamale, where the former second lady, Haija Ramatu Aliu Mahama was interred beside her husband former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama in their family home at Kalpohini in the Sagnarigu Municipality.
The burial was preceded by Islamic prayers at the Tamale jubilee park led by chief Imam of Tamale, witnessed by members of parliament, Muslim clerics, and well-wishers in the region.
