Girls Education Initiative Ghana (GEIG), a non-profit organization, has kick-started a flagship literacy project, Read To Grow, as part of noble efforts to hasten Ghana’s slow-paced literacy drive.

The Early Childhood Literacy program targeting over 50000 students and community participants in Basic schools across Ghana; comes at a time several Basic School students in underserved communities possess leadership potential, but cannot read and write as expected of their class.

The 2021 report on the Population and Housing Census organized by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) revealed that Ghana’s literacy rate increased by just 2.7% over a decade rising marginally from 67.5% in 2010 to 69.5% in 2021.

To support the efforts to improve literacy, the Read to Grow project a partnership between GEIG, and the Act Community Library of Alpha Beta Educational Centre is commencing its nationwide work in the Ablekuma West Municipality.

The intervention which was launched at the Dansoman Zammarama Lane will enable students in the Ablekuma West Municipality to access literacy education after school hours as they patronize the community library established by Alpha Beta Educational Centre

In collaboration with communities and schools, the joint effort is expected to complement what teachers teach in the classroom.

GEIG will use various approaches to reach the students, using both virtual and physical means to deliver the literacy lessons for easy understanding and participation.

With funding support from the Reach for Change-Ghana and Jacobs Foundation and a donation from Indomie Ghana and Promasidor, GEIG calls on all to support the program by enrolling their children and students in the Read To Grow program to increase the literacy rate for underserved communities.

The literacy program themed ReadToGrow forms part of the efforts of the mission of GEIG to offer access to quality and inclusive education in line with the United Nations Strategic Development Goals (UNSDG) 4.

Established in 2014, Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG) provides financial and academic support to girls and applicants with special needs to access higher-quality education and professional opportunities.

GEIG is transforming the lives of young women in Ghana and improving the development and poverty reduction of the country overall by offering higher education and professional opportunities to an untapped source of talent.
