Consumers of water and electricity will pay more from today, June 1, 2023 following recent hike in tariffs by the Public Utility Regulatory Authority(PURC).
According to the PURC the 18.36% and 19% upward adjustment in electricity and water respectively is as a result of cost of production.
Regional Director of Operations for the PURC, Alhaji Abubakari Jabari in an interview with Starr news on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 explained that those who will be paying post paid bills on June 1, 2023 will still be doing so based on the old rate.
“So Ghana water for instance, most of their bills will be the old rate that they will be using until the consumption that gets into June that is when it will be implemented. From tomorrow, the new rate will kick in and whatever amount you deposit, they will start implementing the new rate after the end of the month so the calculation will use that one and do the balancing. So if you don’t need credit don’t go and panic and buy.”
“I know most people go to buy their credit at the beginning of the month, I don’t see any point in that but people have the perception that if you buy credit in the first week of the month you might get some discount. You can’t force yourself to be within the lifeline, so any time you go to buy your credit, it is as good as buying in the first week or first day of the month. It’s a normal operational issue so we don’t expect people to go and cue today in trying to avoid the effect of any adjustment that has been done,” Alhaji Abubakari Jabari added.
