Akufo-Addo has sacrificed competence for loyalty – Asah Asante

Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Asah Asante has stated that the current government led by President Akufo-Addo has sacrificed competence for loyalty.

This comes after a leading contender and a former Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, pulled out from the race citing maltreatment of his polling agent in the North East region during the party’s super delegates’ conference, among others.

Alan Kyeremateng added that the Super Delegates Conference was strategically and tactically skewed in favour of one particular aspirant.

Commenting on the issue on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the Political Science Lecturer indicated that the governing New Patriotic Party must not take Alan Kyerematen withdrawal from the race lightly.

“As for ‘breaking the 8’, they are saying it because there are a whole lot of factors that will come into play. I have said it time and again that the issue of the economy will come strongly to those who have managed it well. Is the one who will be crowned with all the efforts in the country? Corruption and who has managed it well will be a factor.

“Unemployment is still a problem associated with the youth, it will still feature. Issues of competence and people believe that there are a lot of competent people in this government and the government has sacrificed competence for loyalty.  They believe that somebody must come with the political will to be able to engage competent people to right the wrongs,” Dr. Asante stated.

He added that Ghanaians are also expecting somebody who will take very tough decisions for the betterment of the country.

However, Mr. Kyerematen withdrawal brings to 4 the number of persons set to contest the race in November 4, which include the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie and Francis Addai Nimo.
