NPP MP calls on gov’t to brief public about $170m GPGC judgment debt

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central Patrick Yaw Boamah has charged the government to brief Ghanaians about the $170 million judgment debt awarded in favour of GPGC by UK court of arbitration over illegal termination of power purchase contract.

Ghana’s properties in the UK are up for sale to settle the remaining $140 million after initial payment of $30 million.

Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko under whose tenure the termination took place has absolved himself of blame.

But addressing the media in Parliament, Mr. Patrick Boamah who is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee expressed worry over attachment of Ghana’s property to the judgment.

“The judgment that a private sector participation within the energy sector obtained against the government. I expect that the government comes with the true position of the matter.

“Especially with regards to arbitrary awards that were given against Ghana, especially when private properties of the government are being attached, especially the Regina House London which houses the International Commercial Bank. It is a matter that concerns me and it is a matter that I want the government to at least let the people of Ghana know where we stand with regards to that arbitral award,” he added.
