Akroso Senior High Technical School (AKROSTECH), the bronze medalists of the 10th African Tug of War Championship held in Zimbabwe, have paid a courtesy call on the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong, and the Regional Director of Education, Mrs. Ivy Asantewa Owusu, PhD.
The team, accompanied by Headmistress Mrs. Belinda Twum, their trainer, and the Head of the Physical Education Department, visited to present their medals and share their success story.
Akroso Senior High Technical School from the Eastern Region represented Ghana’s Tug of War team, and placed third in spite of Ghana’s first appearance, winning BRONZE at the men’s 640kg category at the just-ended 10th African Tug of War Championship in Zimbabwe, VICTORIA FALLS.
The keenly-contested competition, which started from June 19 to 22, drew teams from Uganda, Ghana, Zambia, South Africa, Nigeria and host Zimbabwe.
Hon. Seth Kwame Acheampong praised the students and their technical team for their remarkable achievements.
He promised a fitting welcome ceremony to celebrate their success and expressed his desire to organize a competition in their honour.
Additionally, the Regional Minister highlighted plans to promote tug-of-war in schools in the region to encourage the sport’s growth, balancing sports with academics.
Mrs. Ivy Owusu Asantewaa, PhD, commended the students for their exceptional performance, which brought honor to the school, the region, and the nation.
She noted that Akroso Senior High Technical School was the only representative from Ghana, competing against twenty-nine teams from four African countries, showcasing remarkable strength, teamwork, and dedication to secure the bronze medal.
Emmanuel Ola Williams, President of the Ghana Tug of War Association, had earlier praised the team for making Ghana proud.
He stated that the potential for greater achievements with government and corporate support, noting the team’s impressive performance in the men’s 640kg category.
