The Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) is set to restart out-patient dialysis services next week, providing much-needed relief to end-stage kidney patients who rely on the treatment for survival
The hospital had suspended operations at its Renal Unit two weeks ago due to a shortage of essential medical supplies, leading to the reported deaths of three patients.
The shutdown forced many others to either abandon their treatment or seek costly alternatives at private facilities, where dialysis sessions ranged from GH¢600 to GH¢1,000, significantly higher than the GH¢491 charged by the public hospital.
In-patient dialysis services resumed on Monday after the hospital received the necessary consumables. The Head of Public Relations at KBTH, Mustapha Salifu, confirmed in an interview that the supplies have now arrived, allowing the hospital to extend its services to out-patients starting next week.
The renal unit offers specialised services for renal disorders. It also performs renal biopsies to help diagnose kidney problems and offers dialysis for both acute and chronic kidney ailments.
