The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has condemned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to charge 50pesewa from citizens to check their eligibility and names on the voter register via the USSD code.
Ghana’s electoral governing body has stated that persons who are unable to visit district centers to check their names can use a USSD code to check their eligibility at a cost.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Lantam Papanko, Nelson-Dafeamekpor described the fee as “unlawful” and urged the EC to withdraw it immediately.
“The EC cannot unilaterally determine fees for services. Parliament must approve such charges.
“The people should have free access to determine if their names are included in the register. That’s why the exhibition of the Provisional Voters Register is a major exercise, funded by the state,” Nelson-Dafeamekpor added.
He questioned the fairness of the 50 pesewa charge, citing concerns for citizens who cannot afford it.
Nelson Dafeamekpor added “If I don’t pay the 50 pesewa, I cannot use the short code. What happens if I don’t have the money to pay?”
Nelson-Dafeamekpor called on the EC to include the USSD service in their budget and submit it to Parliament for approval.
He stated that “All services rendered by the EC are funded by the state and approved by Parliament.”
Despite low turnout on the first day of the voter exhibition exercise, Nelson-Dafeamekpor expressed optimism for a high turnout in his constituency today.
