Election 2024 is about the economy, not your ‘useless’ things – Mahama to Bawumia

The flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has replied to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia that the impending general elections is about Ghana’s economy and not “useless things.”

John Mahama openly presented five questions to Dr. Bawumia, focusing on Ghana’s economic difficulties, including the depreciation of the cedi, the national debt increase, rising inflation, a reported GHS24 million loan from the Bank of Ghana, and Bawumia’s shift from economic issues to digitalization issues.

The questions reflect long-standing concerns over Ghana’s economic direction with Mahama challenging that Bawumia has drifted from economic priorities that previously defined his agenda.

In response to the questions posed to Bawumia, he replied to Mahama with 50 questions including the number of compost plants he built during his time in power. Mr. Mahama then responds to Dr. Bawumia telling him that the issue is about the economy.

“Simple questions that Ghanaians want you to answer. You’re going to respond with how many compost plants, how many compost plants did you built, and how many you built. That is not what the issue is in Ghana today.

“At the time, the American economy was in recession, the way the Ghanaian economy is in crisis today. And people were talking about immigration, talking about all kinds of useless things. Do you know what the Clinton people said? it is about the economy, stupid.

“Today, I’m repeating those words. This election is about the economy, stupid. It’s not about all those other useless things about who built how many compost plants.”

Mr. Mahama disclosed that the 50 questions posed to him have nothing on the economy because the economy is in a bad state.

“Even if you look at the 50 questions, he asked me, he has skillfully avoided the economy. There is nothing about the economy in those 50 questions. And that’s why I gave you the 5 questions. Why are you running away from the economy? Because you were brought in to fix the economy. The economy is in a terrible state”, he said.
