The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ashanti Region has vowed to resist the use of indelible ink that could easily be cleaned in the upcoming elections, calling it a deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity of the voting process.
The party’s Regional Communications Officer, Abass Nurudeen, claimed that Electoral Commission officials used such wipeable ink at the voting booth in certain areas during the Special Voting exercise on Monday.
He said although the NDC had raised it with the regional Electoral Commission, they would be vigilant in ensuring that they are not used again tomorrow.
“In some constituencies, we realize that some of the indelible ink used by the EC are easily cleanable. The essence, or purpose, of indelible ink is to have an already voted individual marked such that he cannot go to another polling station to vote. So using an indelible ink that is cleanable is creating the necessary environment for multiple voting and impersonation.
“We raised this issue and the EC has given us the firm indication, the regional EC, has given us the indication that all those cleanable indelible inks have been replaced. We sincerely hope whatever assurances he has given us is true. But on the D-Day, we will not countenance the use of any indelible ink that is easily cleanable,” he told journalists during a press engagement.
Mr. Nurudeen further called on party sympathizers, supporters and all who badly wanted change in government to rally behind former President John Mahama and all parliamentary candidates in the region.
