Call for IPAC meeting over election disputes – Peace Council to EC

The National Peace Council (NPC) has advised the Electoral Commission (EC) convene an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to address the ongoing tensions surrounding the delayed collation of election results in three constituencies in the Eastern Region, thus Akwatia, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, and Fanteakwa.

The NPC’s call comes amid reports of disruptions, destruction, and arson at collation centers across the country, prompting the Electoral Commission (EC) to move the collation of results from the constituencies to regional and then to the national level at the Tesano Police Training School in Greater Accra.

The NPC, in a statement clarified that the decision to relocate the collation was made by the EC, and not due to any influence from political parties or the Ghana Police Service.

The Peace Council has urged political parties to use legal and peaceful means to seek redress for any concerns.

In light of the tensions, the NPC emphasised the need for political parties and other stakeholders to engage in dialogue. It called on the EC to convene the IPAC meeting to bring all parties together and work towards an amicable solution to the impasse.

The NPC also highlighted the importance of continued media coverage to ensure transparency during this critical phase of the electoral process.

The Council assured the public that it remains committed to engaging with all relevant stakeholders to resolve the issue and ensure a peaceful conclusion to the electoral process.

“The NPC calls on the EC to convene an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC)meeting with all political party representatives and other important stakeholders to discuss and agree an amicable resolution to the impasse. The NPC also encourages the media to continue its diligent efforts to report and broadcast election-related activities to the Ghanaian public to ensure transparency of the electoral process. The NPC continues to speak with all relevant stakeholders to resolve this matter and ensure a peaceful resolution.”
