You Don’t Deserve to Remain in Office if You Ignore 2020, 2024 Post-Election Violence – Toobu to IGP

The Member of Parliament for Wa West, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has stated that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, does not deserve to remain in office if he fails to investigate the post-electoral violence of the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

His comment follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama urging the IGP to initiate an investigation into the violence that occurred during both elections, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives in various parts of the country.

The violence has left a lasting scar on Ghana’s democratic process.

According to President Mahama, the investigation is intended to ensure accountability and deliver justice for the victims and their families.

Speaking to Tutuwaa Danso on Starr FM’s Starr Today, Mr. Toobu argued that it is important to hold those responsible accountable for the violence.

“What occurred in the 2020 and 2024 elections regarding violence and deaths must be thoroughly investigated, and the findings should be made public. What the President has done so far has been lenient towards the Ghana Police Service. It is not for the President to personally direct investigations; rather, it is the constitutional duty of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to initiate investigations immediately when there are murders. The reason the President is directing the IGP is because no report has been presented to him.”

“If I were the IGP, I would recognize that starting investigations now would indicate a failure to act earlier. What I expect from the IGP is to submit a comprehensive progress report on all incidents of violence from 2020 to 2024 to His Excellency the President. The report should outline what actions have been taken so far and what steps are being planned moving forward. If he were to take the President’s letter and treat the investigation into the murder cases as a new matter, I believe he would no longer deserve to remain in office,” he added.

Meanwhile, Security Analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa welcomed President Mahama’s decision, stating that it is timely and beneficial.
