Member of Parliament for Walewale, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama has strongly condemned the recent military brutalities in the constituency.
The violence, which erupted in the area, left residents wounded, in fear and distress.
Reacting to the incident, Dr. Kabiru vehemently condemned it in a recent statement, citing that there is no justifiable cause for what happened.
“I unreservedly condemn the military brutality against innocent residents of Walewale. There is no justification whatsoever for the unprovoked violence on civilians.”
The incident reportedly began after a vehicle loaded with pepper caught fire and burned, prompting a massive military response that escalated into a chaotic scene in the town.
Eyewitness reports indicate that the burnt vehicle, which was travelling from Bawku to Accra, suffered an electrical fault, leading to the fire.
However, the military’s reaction to the incident quickly spread beyond the vehicle, resulting in the brutal treatment of civilians within that area.
The MP thus noted that, the issues surrounding the burned vehicle did not in any way warrant any military intervention.
“There are good reasons why military intervention in civilian space is restricted and will only be called upon when matters escalate beyond control. The military command therefore owes the victims unqualified apologies for these excesses.”
He therefore pledged to stand for his people and take the necessary actions to bring justice to the victims.
“I shall liaise with the affected persons to ascertain the scale of injury and the next line of action to bring justice to the affected. I wish to also entreat the people of Walewale to continue to abide by the law and use lawful means in addressing grievances.”
