The Ghana Football Association has appointed German international Winfried Schäfer as director of football and advisor for the Black Stars, and here’s all you need to know about him.
Winfried Anton Schäfer is a 75-year-old German tactician with a coaching experience that spans over 36 years.
The former midfielder has managed over 14 teams, including Borussia Monchengladback, Karlsruher SC, Stuttgart, the Thailand, and Jamaican national teams, and notably the Cameroonian national team with whom he won the 2002 AFCON in Mali.
Schafer is a respected manager in the Asian terrain, having managed top clubs like Al-Ahli Dubai, Al-Ain, Baniyas, and Iranian giants Esteghlal
Schäfer is a coach whose teams are noted with the high-pressing style of football.
He is quoted to have said in 2013 that ” When you want to play pressing (football), you need players who can run 90 minutes for aggressive pressing,” But first of all, you need fitness, discipline and courage. We have to play at a high level, and the high level is pressing. When you lose the ball, you have to fight for the ball.”
Winfried Schäfer’s has managed over 940 games with a win percentage of 42.19%.
His latest job was in the Qatari league with Al-Khor, where he managed the team from January to November 2021. Schäfer has been inactive since.
