The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has defended the establishment of the Youth Development ministry by President John Mahama.
According to him, the move was not the President’s initiative but a recommendation from the constitutional review process under former Presidents John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on GHOne TV Hard Talk show with Serwaa Amihere, Opare Addo clarified that President Mahama’s decision to create the ministry was rooted in a broader constitutional framework.
“You can’t force anything on President Mahama if he doesn’t believe in it. The creation of this ministry was not my idea. The constitutional review document that was led by President Mills and President Mahama had a case for the establishment of a ministry solely for youth development.
“We only echoed that view from the constitutional review document. President Mahama understands the importance and the need to put young people at the center of this democracy.”
According to him, the constitutional review document had made a case for a dedicated ministry focused solely on youth development. “We only echoed that view from the constitutional review document,” he added.
Opare Addo underscored President Mahama’s commitment to youth inclusion in governance, stating that the president recognizes the importance of placing young people at the center of Ghana’s democracy. He reaffirmed that the establishment of the Youth Development and Empowerment Ministry aligns with Mahama’s broader vision for youth participation in national decision-making.
