The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has strongly rejected reports that senior members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are allegedly planning to lead Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to seek forgiveness from former President John Dramani Mahama.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, June 11, the NDC expressed firm opposition to any such move and urged the NPP leadership to “abandon such intentions immediately.”
This follows media reports suggesting that key NPP figures are working behind the scenes to arrange a reconciliation meeting between Chairman Wontumi and President Mahama. Although the NPP has yet to issue a formal confirmation, the reports have sparked varied reactions across Ghana’s political landscape.
Chairman Nana Akwasi questioned the motive behind the purported apology, asking whether it was in response to Chairman Wontumi’s past derogatory remarks aimed at President Mahama during the NPP’s time in government, or if it is tied to his current legal challenges.
“What exactly is he going to plead for? Is it regarding the numerous insults he directed at President Mahama during the tenure of the NPP government, or is it in connection with his current legal issues?” he asked.

He further criticised the apparent silence of NPP elders at the time the insults were made. “Where were these so-called elders when Chairman Wontumi was shamelessly insulting the President and his family? Did they condemn his despicable conduct, or were they the ones encouraging him?” the statement read.
Nana Akwasi made it clear that no access would be granted for any such engagement, describing the attempt as “inappropriate and unacceptable.”
