NIA staff suspend strike, resume work today

NIA staff return to work after suspending strike over unpaid allowances, with services resuming nationwide from June 30.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) is et to resume work today, Monday, June 30, 2025, following temporal suspension of the indefinite strike action by its staff under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU).

The announcement follows days of extensive engagements involving the NIA, the National Labour Commission (NLC), the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), the Ministry of Finance, and the leadership of the PSWU.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) earlier ordered the immediate suspension of the strike, describing it as unlawful and procedurally flawed.

In a statement dated Sunday, June 29, the Authority commended the Union for its cooperation and assured staff that their concerns remain a top priority.

“Management acknowledges and appreciates the good faith demonstrated by the Union and wishes to assure all staff that their legitimate concerns remain a priority and will continue to receive the urgent attention they deserve,” the statement read.

The strike, which was declared over delays in the payment of the 20% Operational Support Allowance — the only allowance supplementing NIA staff salaries — had severely disrupted ID registration services nationwide.

Following the suspension, the Divisional Executive Council of the PSWU at the NIA confirmed that key agreements had been reached regarding the phased payment of the allowance.

Payments for July and August 2025 will be handled internally by the NIA, while arrears from January to June, along with September’s payment and future entitlements, will be processed by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) in September.

The Union described the suspension as a gesture of good faith but cautioned that the strike could be reinstated if the agreed timelines are not strictly followed.

“This temporary suspension is a calculated demonstration of good faith on the part of the Union to facilitate the seamless execution of these administrative and financial processes,” the Union emphasized.

All NIA staff have been directed to report for duty today, Monday, June 30, 2025, as services resume at all registration centres nationwide.

“All NIA offices and registration centres across the country will resume full operations on Monday, 30th June 2025.”

The NIA, in its statement, apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused by the industrial action and urged citizens to take advantage of the resumption of services to access their national ID cards.
