The minority in Parliament has accused the Jean Mensah led Electoral Commission of attempting to hand the Ablekuma North seat to the governing NDC.
According to the NPP MPs, the announcement of a rerun of the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations in the constituency is because EC officials are seeking to protect their jobs. The commission has slated the rerun for July 11 following what it says is the inability of their presiding officer to authenticate results in those stations.
During the presentation of the business statement in Parliament today, minority leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin argued the U-turn from the EC is to pander to the dictates of the NDC.
“We woke up to a surprise announcement by the Electoral Commission that there will be elections on July 11,” he said. “They are dealing with issues of their own integrity… what has changed? We should be careful with how we are managing this democracy.”
He further questioned whether recent public comments by some senior politicians are compelling the EC to secure their jobs, describing the decision as unfair and unjust.
Majority leader Mahama Ayariga however refuted the claims of the minority. The Bawku Central MP argued the EC provided enough grounds for its decision for the limited rerun and wondered what the fears of the minority leader is relative to the rerun.
