Police assure security as EC conducts parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North

Police deploy personnel across 19 polling stations in Ablekuma North to maintain peace during today’s controversial parliamentary rerun.

The Ghana Police Service has outlined comprehensive security arrangements ahead of today’s parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North Constituency, where elections are being held in 19 polling stations to conclude a long-standing electoral dispute.

In a statement dated Thursday, July 10, the Accra Regional Police Command assured the public of its readiness to maintain peace, law, and order throughout the exercise.

The Police confirmed the deployment of personnel to all 19 polling stations designated by the Electoral Commission (EC) and announced additional traffic and security controls in the area.

“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to assure the public of its preparedness to provide adequate security before, during, and after the Parliamentary Re-run at Ablekuma North Constituency scheduled for Friday, 11th July 2025. The Electoral Commission has designated nineteen (19) polling stations within the constituency for the re-run, and Police personnel will be deployed to all locations to maintain peace, law and order throughout the process,” the statement noted.

Strategic barriers will be placed to restrict unauthorized access to voting areas, and the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity via emergency lines 18555 or 192.

The Electoral Commission is today supervising the rerun following verification challenges that affected the outcome of the December 2024 parliamentary elections in the constituency.

According to the EC, results from 19 of 37 polling stations could not be properly verified, while results from the remaining 18 had already been certified.

The rerun marks an important step in concluding the delayed parliamentary process in Ablekuma North, which has been without a Member of Parliament since 2024 due to legal and political contention between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

However, the EC’s decision has triggered controversy. The NPP has rejected the rerun, accusing the Commission of political bias and claiming the decision favours the NDC. The party announced a boycott, describing the process as unlawful and a threat to democratic precedent.

In a surprising development, the NPP’s own parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, is participating in the election despite her party’s stance.

Meanwhile, the EC has refuted all allegations of interference and reiterated the Commission’s independence.

The EC says it is committed to concluding the electoral process in Ablekuma North and restoring parliamentary representation for its residents.
