Grammy-nominated Ghanaian musician and global cultural ambassador, Rocky Dawuni, has opened up about the deep spiritual roots that shaped his life and music, revealing that he started a church when he was just seven years old.
Speaking during an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray on Starr 103.5 FM on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Dawuni shared how growing up in a military barracks sparked his early desire to lead and minister.
“I actually started a church when I was a kid in the barrack. I was like 7 years old,” he said. “I got all the kids to go and cut like palm fronds and they built the church in the back, and I would gather them and I’d preach from the Bible.”
He described how, even at a young age, he was deeply committed to reading scripture and participating in catechism classes through the Catholic Church.
“Every night I read the Bible and then I started even doing catechism stuff in the Catholic Church. So they would come and pick us from the barracks and take us to Tema and then bring us back,” Dawuni recalled.
Dawuni said this early spiritual foundation continued to guide him through life and has significantly influenced his music. Over the years, he’s performed at globally significant religious sites, including the Vatican, where he and his band headlined an event titled Journey of the Itineraries of the Soul.
“We were invited by the Vatican. I spent time over there,” he noted. “I have had the opportunity of being at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, right to the Well of Souls where Muhammad ascended… and then the Wailing Wall.”

He emphasised that his musical journey has always been interwoven with a spiritual search that transcends religion, race, or borders.
“My music is informed by spirituality… finding wherever God manifested in God’s diversity. And I try to find God. That’s why when I see everybody, it’s like my brother. I don’t see tribal differences. I don’t see racial differences. I don’t see national differences; because I see God in everybody.”
