Jomoro MP expands free NHIS registration and renewal exercise to nine communities

The second phase of a free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration and renewal exercise in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region has commenced across nine communities.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Member of Parliament for Jomoro, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, forms part of efforts to expand healthcare access and ensure more residents are enrolled onto the NHIS.

The first phase of the exercise, which began on March 11, 2026, covered 17 communities and ended on March 30, 2026. According to organisers, more than 1,000 residents either registered for new NHIS cards or renewed expired ones during the initial phase.

The second phase officially began on May 14, 2026, and is expected to end on May 29, 2026, targeting more than 1,500 residents across the municipality.

Communities benefiting from the second phase include Tikobo No. 1, Jaway Wharf, Sowdadzem, Elubo, Tikobo No. 2, Ahobre 1 and 2, Takinta, Egbazo and Abusuazo.

The exercise commenced at Tikobo No. 1 on Thursday, May 14, where large numbers of residents reportedly turned up to register or renew their cards, making it difficult for officials to attend to everyone on the first day.

As a result, the exercise in Tikobo No. 1 was extended to continue on Friday, May 15, before the team moves to Jaway Wharf on Saturday, May 16.

The registration team is also expected to visit Sowdadzem on May 18, Elubo on May 19, and Tikobo No. 2 on May 21, while Ahobre 1 and 2, Takinta, Egbazo and Abusuazo will host the exercise between May 22 and May 29.

Explaining the selection of the beneficiary communities, Madam Affo-Toffey, who also serves as Deputy Minister for Transport, said the second phase was designed to cover communities that could not benefit from the first phase.

She noted that turnout for the current phase is expected to exceed that of the first phase, particularly because larger communities such as Elubo and Jaway Wharf are included.

According to the MP, each community will be allocated two days for the exercise to ensure all residents without NHIS cards or those requiring renewal are adequately served.

Madam Affo-Toffey further assured residents that a third phase of the exercise would be rolled out to ensure wider NHIS coverage across the Jomoro Municipality.
