President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will fully reconstruct the Damanko-Kpassa water system in the Nkwanta North District to provide reliable access to safe and clean drinking water for over 65,000 people across 13 communities.

Speaking during his tour of the Oti Region on Friday, July 25, President Mahama expressed concern over the region’s high incidence of typhoid fever, describing it as “a troubling statistic in a region surrounded by freshwater.” He attributed the situation to the absence of safe and treated water sources and emphasized the urgent need for intervention.

“As part of our Water for All initiative, I have directed the Ghana Water Company Limited to establish an operational presence in the region and work with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency to design a sustainable water system for urban and rural areas,” he said.

The affected communities include Damanko, Papaye, Damanko Badule, Jato Akura, Kabre Akura, Jatokprakpra, Sibi Central, Sibi-Badule, Sibi Hill Top, Chorkorsi Akura, Kantinka Akura, Tindani Akura, and Kpassa, the district capital.

“For far too long, the people of these communities have struggled with an inadequate water supply due to broken pumps and damaged pipelines. This has resulted in hardship and inconvenience for our citizens,” he noted.

Mahama revealed that the government, through the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), has prioritized the Damanko-Kpassa water system as one of two major water projects for 2025. The project includes replacing damaged pumps, reconstructing intake and treatment units, and upgrading leaking PVC pipes to durable HDPE pipes.

“This project will benefit approximately 65,407 people in the Nkwanta North District,” Mahama said, adding that it is expected to be completed within 18 months at an estimated cost of GH₵37,086,644.96.

He also assured residents of Bonakye and other nearby communities that their water supply concerns would be addressed. “Bonakye is being considered for inclusion in Phase II of the Damanko-Kpassa Water Supply Project, following the successful completion of Phase I,” he stated.

Reiterating his government’s commitment to equitable development, Mahama concluded: “We will work tirelessly to complete this project and ensure that the people of this district and the entire Oti Region have access to safe, clean, and reliable drinking water.”
