The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has tipped President John Dramani Mahama to become Chairman of the African Union (AU) in 2027, citing his experience and continental leadership credentials.
Speaking on Mahama’s role on the African stage, Ablakwa noted that the president’s renewed mandate in Ghana positions him to advance Africa’s vision of unity, development, and stronger global partnerships.
President Mahama, who has confirmed he will not seek a third term in Ghana, has a track record of regional leadership.
He served as ECOWAS Chairman from March 2014 to May 2015, coordinating the region’s response to the Ebola outbreak and mediating political crises in Burkina Faso and Mali.
President Mahama has also collaborated with the AU on peace and security initiatives and supported AU and UN peacekeeping missions with Ghanaian troops.
His focus on regional integration and infrastructure aligns closely with the AU’s Agenda 2063 for a prosperous and united Africa.
The AU Chair rotates annually among Africa’s five regions—North, South, East, West, and Central Africa.
Given President Mahama’s stature as a former ECOWAS Chairman and his renewed mandate in Ghana, many analysts believe he will be strongly considered when West Africa’s turn to lead the AU arises.
Ablakwa stressed that President Mahama’s leadership would bring renewed transformation and deepen Africa’s engagement with global partners.
He said the prospect of President at the helm of the AU inspires confidence across the continent.
