The government has provided GH¢100,000 in support of traders affected by the devastating fire at Suame Post Office Market in Kumasi.
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, presented the donation on the evening of Wednesday, August 27, during a visit to the fire scene to console victims.
He described the incident as heartbreaking, noting the immense loss traders faced after years of saving to build their businesses.
“It is heartbreaking to save capital for business, just for fire to destroy everything,” he said.
Dr. Amoakohene assured the victims that the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, would continue to support them during this difficult time.
Speaking on behalf of the fire victims, Madam Mercy Oppong commended the government’s intervention and urged continued support when the market is rebuilt.
The blaze, which erupted around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26, destroyed over 300 shops and left traders and residents in shock.
The rapid spread of the fire was fueled by the explosion of more than 30 gas cylinders. While no casualties have been reported, the extent of the damage is expected to run into millions of cedis.
Isaac Justice Bediako, EIB News Ashanti Regional Correspondent, reported that residents rushed to salvage goods before the flames consumed the market.
Firefighters continue efforts to fully control the blaze as authorities assess the full scope of losses.
