The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has urged the people of Akwatia to honour the memory of their late Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Kumi, by voting massively for the party’s parliamentary candidate, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, in Tuesday’s by-election.

Speaking at a campaign float on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Kodua said the overwhelming turnout of supporters and the large convoy of vehicles at the event reflected the community’s commitment to ensuring that the work initiated by the late Ernest Kumi is completed.

“The only way to reward and remember our departed MP, Ernest Kumi, is for the people of Akwatia to vote massively for Solomon Kwame Asumadu. That is why we’ve seen so many crowds here, and that is why we’ve seen so many cars following the float. These are individual cars that have decided to join because they know the good work started by Ernest Kumi must be completed by Solomon Kwame Asumadu,” Kodua stated.

The NPP General Secretary dismissed the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) campaign message that voting for their candidate would bring development to Akwatia.

He described the claim as misleading, questioning the NDC’s ability to deliver when, according to him, many of their MPs are struggling to secure development in their constituencies.

“The NDC saying they can bring development to the people of Akwatia is the biggest fallacy they can tell the people. Even with the overwhelming majority they have in Parliament, what is the status of their MPs? They can’t even go to Parliament. They are crying for development in their respective constituencies, so what is the guarantee that even if they win the Akwatia seat, development will come here?” he quizzed.

Kodua further described the by-election as an emotional one, insisting that Akwatia voters would use the ballot to honour the late MP.

He also accused the NDC of frustrating Ernest Kumi during his tenure, noting that their current candidate was among those who took the late lawmaker to court.

“It’s just political gimmicks that they feel their campaign message should be centered on. But I can assure you that the good people of Akwatia are going to the polls on Tuesday to remember our departed MP. They know one of the people who frustrated the MP is the NDC candidate. They are the ones who took him to court, and today they want to benefit from the death of Ernest Kumi. It won’t happen,” he emphasized.

The by-election follows the passing of Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, and will be contested by Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC, and Owusu Patrick of the Liberal People’s Party.
