The Ashanti Region has been identified as the deadliest in terms of road crashes in Ghana, according to the latest data released by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).
Presenting the mid-year statistics during a media workshop in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Authority, Akwasi Agyenim Boateng, revealed that the region accounted for 25.7 percent of all road crash fatalities and 34.6 percent of injuries recorded nationwide as of July 2025.
“This makes Ashanti the region with the highest number of fatalities and injuries, a disturbing trend that requires urgent intervention,” Mr. Boateng stressed.
The data shows that from January to December 2024, the region recorded 17,680 crash cases, leading to 2,831 deaths and 21,090 injuries.
Within just the first seven months of 2025, an additional 2,560 cases were reported, resulting in 441 deaths and 3,319 injuries.
In total, between January 2024 and July 2025, the Ashanti Region recorded 20,240 reported crash cases, with 3,131 lives lost and 24,409 persons injured.
Mr. Boateng noted that while enforcement and education efforts are ongoing, the figures highlight persistent challenges with reckless driving, speeding, and poor compliance with road safety regulations.
He urged transport operators, motorists, and road users to adopt safer practices to reverse the rising trend of casualties on the region’s roads.
“The numbers are more than just statistics; they represent lives cut short and families left in pain. Road safety must be a shared responsibility,” he added.
The NRSA is expected to intensify road safety campaigns and collaborate with enforcement agencies to address the alarming situation in the Ashanti Region.
