The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced that it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service to track down and arrest fraudsters targeting customers through mobile money scams.
Speaking in an interview on Morning Starr with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Thursday, November 6, the General Manager of External Communications at ECG, Dr. Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, confirmed that intelligence gathered so far indicates that a coordinated criminal network is operating across multiple regions.
“These criminals pretend to be ECG officials and deceive customers into sending money for reconnection or meter replacement. We are collaborating with the police to bring them to justice,” Dr. Ayiku said.
The move follows a recent warning issued by ECG cautioning customers against fraudulent phone calls from individuals posing as company officials and promising to fast-track meter acquisition processes.
According to the company, the impostors have been contacting customers under the guise of assisting them to obtain new meters or resolve existing meter-related challenges. These callers often claim that ECG has received new meters and go on to solicit personal information or money from unsuspecting victims.
Dr. Ayiku reiterated that ECG conducts all transactions strictly through its official channels.
“We encourage all customers to make payments via ECG’s authorised digital channels and to always confirm messages or calls from anyone claiming to represent ECG,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has urged victims of such scams to file formal complaints with supporting evidence to assist ongoing investigations.
