Government will hold a state funeral for the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings, on Friday, November 28, 2025, at Independence Square.
This announcement was made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications in a statement on Thursday, November 6.
The state funeral, according to the Presidency honors Mrs. Rawlings’ lifelong dedication to women’s and children’s rights and her contributions to national development.
Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital following a short illness.
Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast, she was the daughter of the late J.O.T. Agyeman.
She attended Achimota School and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, studying Art with a focus on Textiles, and later pursued higher studies in Interior Design at the London College of Arts. She also earned diplomas in Advanced Personnel Management and Development from institutions in Ghana.
As First Lady, she founded the 31st December Women’s Movement in 1982, championing women’s empowerment, promoting literacy, supporting business start-ups, and advocating for inheritance rights and equal opportunities.
She remained politically active after her husband’s presidency, serving as the first Vice Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress before forming the National Democratic Party in 2012 and later contesting the 2016 presidential election.
Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings was married to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, and together they had four children: Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, and Kimathi.
