The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has ordered the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital following serious concerns over safety and infection prevention standards, as well as an expired license.

In a public notice dated Monday, November 10, 2025, HeFRA explained that intelligence reports, supported by video footage and photographs, indicated that healthcare provision at the facility was “under highly compromised Safety and infection prevention standards.”

The reports were confirmed by a visit from HeFRA’s Compliance and Enforcement directorate on Monday, November 3, 2025.

The notice further stated that the hospital had been operating with an expired HeFRA license, posing “serious concerns for public health and safety.”

HeFRA has therefore directed that the facility be closed immediately and remain so until all safety gaps and infection prevention challenges are fully addressed.

In addition, the hospital has been fined Thirty-Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵35,000) for regulatory violations.

The notice emphasized the steps required for reopening: “The facility must take expeditious steps to regularize its licensing status with the Agency. The facility must uphold high standards of safety in the provision of health services to its clients.”

Acting Registrar Dr. Winfred Korletf Baah said, “HeFRA remains committed to ensuring the safety of the Public through the provision of quality healthcare services.”

The closure highlights the government’s ongoing effort to enforce healthcare regulations and protect patient safety across Ghana.
