Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence, as the country continues to modernise laws governing the digital economy.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly during the WSIS+20 Review, the Minister said Ghana remains aligned with the vision of a people-centred, inclusive and development-oriented information society.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I extend warm greetings and our appreciation to the United Nations and the host authorities for convening this high-level meeting of the WSIS plus 20 review,” he said.
Sam George noted that over the past two decades, Ghana has made significant strides in digitalisation, guided by the principles of the World Summit on the Information Society.
“Twenty years on, Ghana reaffirms its commitment to this vision and the principles that underpin it,” he stated.
He highlighted major investments in fibre infrastructure, expanded 4G coverage and rural telephony sites, emphasising that digital access remains central to national development.
“These efforts reflect our conviction that universal access is fundamental to sustainable development,” the Minister added.
On artificial intelligence, Sam George disclosed that Ghana has adopted a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy to guide its ethical application across government.
“We have equally adopted the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy to guide the ethical and responsible use of AI across government,” he said.
He further noted that Ghana is updating its digital laws and developing safeguards against misinformation while protecting free expression online.
“We’re modernising legislation governing the digital economy as well… We’re developing frameworks to deal with myths and disinformation while respecting the rights of free speech online,” he stressed.
