Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, has confirmed the arrest and detention of former MASLOC Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, by U.S. authorities following an extradition request from Ghana.
In an official statement dated Thursday, January 15, Ambassador Smith disclosed that Tamakloe-Attionu was picked up by the U.S. Marshals Service on January 6, 2026, and is currently being held at the Nevada Southern Detention Center in Pahrump, Nevada, where she is awaiting court proceedings.
According to the Ambassador, the arrest was carried out in response to an extradition request Ghana submitted to U.S. authorities in July 2024, paving the way for her detention pending legal processes in the United States.
The development follows Tamakloe-Attionu’s conviction in April 2024 by the Accra High Court (Financial and Economic Division), which sentenced her to 10 years’ imprisonment for causing financial loss to the state during her tenure at the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC).
She was convicted alongside the former Chief Operating Officer of MASLOC, Daniel Axim, who received a five-year jail term with hard labour. Both were found guilty on 78 counts, including causing financial loss to the state, theft, conspiracy to steal, money laundering, and procurement-related offences.
The case, which began in 2019, was heard in absentia with respect to Tamakloe-Attionu after she left Ghana purportedly for medical reasons and failed to return. Prosecutors told the court that the offences stemmed from the misappropriation of MASLOC funds between 2013 and 2016.
