Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on Metro Mass Transit management to ensure idle buses are put back into service and not allowed to remain out of operation, stressing the need to meet the demands of Ghana’s growing population.
The Vice President’s remarks follow revelations that Metro Mass Transit is currently operating only 130 buses, a steep decline from the more than 1,000 buses the service had in the past.
The situation has coincided with growing public frustration over vehicle shortages, long queues at major terminals, and reports of unapproved fare hikes, particularly in Accra and other urban centres.
Addressing the operators, she said, “Another issue that makes me very, very happy is to learn that you are generating more with less… but there is also a warning that we should never get to where we used to be.”
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang added, “Especially when we have a growing population… If at the time we had less people and a thousand buses, and today we have more people and 400 buses, there is more we need to do.”
The Vice President emphasized the importance of collaboration and long-term planning to prevent a repeat of past inefficiencies, urging operators to work together to expand services and maintain reliability for commuters.
