NPP aspirants have signed a peace pact committing to unity and mutual respect as the New Patriotic Party prepares for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The aspirants who signed the peace pact are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP and former Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Education Minister Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary and Presidential Press Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong.

The agreement was signed on Thursday, January 22, during a ceremony addressed by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who warned that internal division could keep the party in opposition ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the aspirants, Afenyo-Markin described opposition as a difficult experience, urging party members to remain united before, during and after the contest.

“I say that opposition is painful and lonely. We know this. Good friends don’t pick up calls. They ignore us and they find new friends. We are living it. We feel it every day and surely none of us wants to remain there,” he said.

According to him, the NPP can only regain power through discipline, sacrifice and unity, not internal rivalry.

“But power does not come through division. Power comes through discipline. Power comes through unity. Power comes through sacrifice,” he stressed.

Afenyo-Markin called on the aspirants and their supporters to rise above anger, insults and short-term emotions for the sake of the party’s long-term success, urging them to rally behind whoever emerges victorious.

He also described internal party elections as a critical test of the NPP’s institutional strength and commitment to shared values.

“Internal party elections are not merely contests among individuals. They are tests of institutional strength, discipline and commitment to shared values,” he noted.

The January 31, 2026, primary date was approved by the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council to allow sufficient time for campaigning and internal coordination ahead of the 2028 elections.
