The Central Regional Police Command has arrested three students of the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS) in connection with the assault of a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School (SHTS), an incident that drew widespread attention after a video of the attack went viral.
The arrests followed a joint engagement between the Director-General of Police/CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, and the management of SWESBUS on Monday, 23rd February 2026. The school authorities handed over the suspects to the Swedru Divisional Police Command later that evening.
The three students taken into custody are:
- Joseph Amoh, 20 years old
- Benedict Appiah, 18 years old
- Bilal Mamud, 18 years old
They are expected to be arraigned in court for their roles in the attack.
The assault occurred during a zonal inter-school athletics competition in Agona Swedru on Thursday, 19th February 2026. Tensions reportedly escalated between the two schools, resulting in physical violence.
The incident prompted the Ghana Education Service (GES) to suspend all inter-school sports competitions in the Central Region until further notice and to convene a crisis meeting to address student safety and discipline.
In a statement, the Central Regional Police Command condemned the conduct of the students and urged the public, particularly students, to refrain from engaging in violent behavior.
Authorities emphasized that the safety and well-being of students remain a top priority and that all individuals found culpable will face the full extent of the law.
The case has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of discipline in schools, with educators and parents emphasizing the need to balance competitive sports with respect, sportsmanship, and student safety.
