The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has defended government’s decision to rename the Kotoka International Airport without seeking parliamentary approval, insisting the move is legally sound and will not impose significant costs on taxpayers.
Government on Monday, February 23, 2026, announced that the facility would revert to its original name, Accra International Airport.
Addressing journalists in Parliament on Tuesday, February 24, Mr. Nikpe explained that the NLC decree which established a trust in honour of Major General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka and named the airport after him was not backed by a specific operational legislation.
According to the Saboba MP, the absence of such legislation means there is no requirement for a new bill to effect the name change.
He also dismissed suggestions that the renaming exercise would burden the public purse. The Minister noted that ongoing renovation works at the airport would allow for necessary adjustments to signage and branding at minimal cost.
He added that the Ghana Airports Company Limited would rely on its existing vendors to carry out the changes, ensuring no additional financial strain.
Mr. Nikpe maintained that the process is being handled within existing administrative and budgetary frameworks.
