The Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe has affirmed that the Ghana Card is now the essential requirement for citizens to benefit from the government’s Free Primary Healthcare policy.
Speaking on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs with Kodjo Mensah on Monday, 13th April 2026, Dr. Bampoe emphasized that the integration of the Ghana Card into the health system is a cornerstone of the NHIA’s digital transformation strategy.
The transition, he said, aims to remove bureaucratic hurdles that previously hindered rapid access to care.
”With the Free Primary Healthcare policy, all one needs is a Ghana Card,” Dr. Bampoe stated, highlighting the simplicity the government aims to bring to the health sector.
The Ghana Card serves as a single identifier, linking patients to their National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and a digital link which allows for real-time verification, reducing wait times and administrative errors at hospitals and clinics.
The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, announced that the government will roll out its flagship free primary healthcare policy in phases between 2026 and 2028.

According to him, the policy, which will officially be launched on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, will begin with 150 districts out of the 273 across the country.
