Dorcas Affo-Toffey engages US investors to boost tourism and jobs in Jomoro

The Member of Parliament for Jomoro and Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has met with investors from the United States of America in efforts aimed at creating employment opportunities for young people and promoting tourism development in Ghana.

The meeting, which also focused on tourism prospects across the Jomoro Constituency, the Western Region, and the country at large, forms part of broader initiatives to support the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in expanding the sector’s economic contribution.

Jomoro is noted for its significant tourism potential, anchored on its cultural heritage, coastline, and wetland ecosystems. Key attractions highlighted include the Ankasa National Park, located within the Ankasa Conservation Area, which spans about 509 square kilometres and includes the former Nini-Suhien National Park.

Another major site is Nzulezo, a centuries-old stilt village on the Amansuri Lake, home to about 450 residents, mostly farmers, who live in close harmony with their aquatic environment.

The constituency is also home to Fort Apollonia in Beyin, recognised as the last English fort built on the Gold Coast, adding historical value to the area’s tourism offerings.

In addition, the Osagyefo Barge, a dual-fired power generation facility designed to support energy production in the Tano Basin, is located within the district. The facility was commissioned in 1999 under former President Jerry John Rawlings and later relocated to Effasu-Mangyea in 2007 during the presidency of John Agyekum Kufuor.

Jomoro also boasts a 50-kilometre stretch of pristine coastline from Ekabaku to Newtown, characterised by clean sandy beaches and coconut trees that have largely survived the Cape Saint Paul wilt disease, which affected much of Ghana’s coastal coconut plantations.

Speaking after the engagement, Madam Affo-Toffey said the discussions with the US investors focused on unlocking these tourism assets for development and job creation.

“I had the honour of receiving investors from the United States of America to discuss tourism opportunities across Jomoro, the Western Region, and Ghana at large,” she said.

She added that she remains committed to initiatives that promote employment and community development.

“As a representative of the people, I remain committed to initiatives that create jobs, uplift communities, and advance national development,” she stated.

Madam Affo-Toffey further expressed optimism that the engagement would lead to concrete investment outcomes for the benefit of residents in Jomoro and the country.
